According to the Japan Times, wealthy single Chinese women are having to travel abroad to access sperm banks, due to cultural and regulatory restrictions in China.
The article says that unmarried women in China are largely barred from accessing sperm banks and in vitro fertilization treatment in the country, which forces them to seek treatment abroad.
It states that, according to official statistics, the marriage rate in China has been in decline over the last five years. Last year, apparently only 7.2 out of 1,000 people got married. It goes on to say that educated professional women in China also face discrimination when seeking spouses, because their male partners have “difficulty accepting their higher educational or economic accomplishments.”
China’s national health department stipulates that the purpose of sperm banks is for “treating infertility and preventing genetic diseases.” In practice, the article says, this prohibits unmarried women from using them. Women also face discrimination; in Chinese culture, marriage is still considered essential to having a child.
