US Cleveland Clinic expands to London

Cleveland Clinic London is to open its first medical outpatient clinic at 24 Portland Place, Marylebone. This marks a major milestone in Cleveland Clinic London’s development and demonstrates its commitment to London and the UK healthcare market. It believes that strengthening its presence in London will benefit existing patients in the UK and Europe.

Cleveland Clinic London has agreed to lease its first medical outpatient clinic at 24 Portland Place in London, which is expected to begin seeing patients in autumn 2020 for outpatient appointments and diagnostics, and general practice appointments.

24 Portland Place will provide outpatient services in advance of the new London hospital opening in early 2021. The building, owned by The Howard de Walden Estate, is a townhouse in a prime central London location, a short distance from the Cleveland Clinic London Hospital at 33 Grosvenor Place. Cleveland Clinic London has signed an agreement for a 20-year lease of the building set over six floors.

Cleveland Clinic London will be an important addition to the medical provision in the Harley Street area. Harley Street encompasses a wide range of hospitals, clinics and specialists around Harley Street in central London with 5,000 medical specialists working in 250 clinics. It attracts more than one million patient visitors each year. The Howard de Walden Estate is the freehold owner of the 92 acres across of London’s Marylebone in which Harley Street is located.

Cleveland Clinic London will be located at 33 Grosvenor Place, near Buckingham Palace, in the heart of London’s Belgravia. The eight-storey, 324,000-square-foot building is currently under construction. The hospital is scheduled to open in early 2021, and will be Cleveland Clinic’s first facility in London. Cleveland Clinic London will have 185 inpatient beds; eight operating rooms; a full imaging suite; endoscopy and catheterization labs; day case rooms for surgery; and a full neurological suite with rehabilitation. The facility will offer specialty services focusing on general surgery, cardiology, orthopaedics and neurology.

Cleveland Clinic is a health system that includes a 165-acre main campus near downtown Cleveland, 11 regional hospitals throughout Northeast Ohio, multiple facilities in Florida, a facility in Las Vegas, and hospitals in Toronto, Canada; and Abu Dhabi, UAE. In 2018, there were 7.9 million total outpatient visits, 238,000 hospital admissions and observations, and 220,000 surgical cases throughout Cleveland Clinic’s health system. Patients came for treatment from every state and 185 countries.

It believes that strengthening the presence in London will benefit existing patients in the UK and Europe, providing access to specialist care without the need to travel overseas. New technologies, such as virtual health and remote monitoring, alongside a physical hospital location in London, will allow it to spread clinical best practice across borders.
