Project to halt malnutrition launched

A project to prevent older people from suffering from malnutrition was launched last month, aiming to increase diagnosis and treatment and improve care and support. Funded by the government, The Malnutrition Prevention Project is being piloted in five areas including Lambeth and Southwark in London, and Salford – these projects are already underway with two more set to follow. The project will see hospitals, GP practices and care homes work with community groups to reach out to those at risk, while volunteers from local Age UK groups will be on hand to provide extra support nationwide. Malnutrition often goes undiagnosed or untreated because of the incorrect belief that a smaller appetite and losing weight is a normal part of ageing.
