Kevin Beirne has been appointed as chief executive officer of the ExtraCare Charitable Trust.

He will succeed Mick Laverty, who is retiring after 10 years of leading the charity through a period of growth and development.

Beirne, who will take up the role on 12 October, has experience in the retirement living market. Since 2018, he has been director, head of retirement living at Octopus Investments Ltd.

He was previously managing director and executive group director at One Housing Group, where he led One Support, developed its later living platform across 1,416 units and 20 schemes, and established a joint venture with an NHS trust to deliver integrated services and extra care reablement schemes. He is also a board director of the European senior living trade body, the Senior Housing & Healthcare Association, and a founding director of ARCO.

‘On behalf of the board, I am pleased to welcome Kevin Beirne as ExtraCare’s new CEO. His depth of experience across retirement living, housing and care will be invaluable as we look to the future and continue to evolve our communities for current and future residents. I would also like to thank Mick for his outstanding leadership and commitment over the past decade, which has helped shape ExtraCare into the pioneering charity it is today,’ said Nick Towe, chair of the ExtraCare Charitable Trust.

Laverty said: ‘It has been an honour to lead ExtraCare over the past 10 years and to work alongside so many dedicated colleagues, residents, volunteers and partners. I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and the difference ExtraCare continues to make to its residents lives every day.’

Beirne added: ‘I’m excited to be joining ExtraCare at such an important time and to have the opportunity to support the charity’s next phase. Throughout my career in the retirement living sector, I’ve had the privilege of working across development, investment and operations, giving me a deep appreciation of what it takes to create communities where people can truly thrive.

‘ExtraCare has an outstanding reputation for creating communities that people aspire to live, remain connected and enjoy later life in with confidence. It is a charity with a remarkable heritage, a clear social purpose and a unique model that is admired across the sector. I’m looking forward to working with everyone across ExtraCare to build on Mick’s excellent stewardship of the charity and continue delivering vibrant communities that create better lives for older people.’
