MDU appoints professional services director

Dr Caroline Fryar

The Medical Defence Union (MDU) has appointed Dr Caroline Fryar as professional services director.

Previously a GP, Fryar has worked at the MDU for seventeen years in various roles, most recently as director of medical services.

During that time, she has set up a specialist disciplinary team to support members with concerns raised over their clinical practice and developed the MDU peer support network, which connects members who have faced stressful investigations.

Taking over from Dr Hugh Stewart, who has retired after more than 20 years at the MDU,

she will head up a team of over 100, providing key services for MDU members, such as the 24-hour advice lines, education, guidance and support with complaints and inquests.

The team is also responsible for defending members in regulatory proceedings and clinical negligence claims.

‘It’s a great honour to take on the role of professional services director and I look forward to continuing Hugh’s achievements in developing the services we provide to doctors and dentists across the UK,’ said Fryar. ‘Our members are working under incredible pressure, and I intend to champion their medico-legal interests so they can focus on safely caring for patients. I am proud to lead such an outstanding professional services team.’
