Bupa’s Cromwell Hospital has become the first hospital in the UK and Europe to use a new pulse field ablation catheter to treat patients with abnormal heart rhythms.
Six patients have undergone treatment using the FARAPOINT pulse field ablation catheter, with the procedures carried out by Cromwell Hospital consultant cardiologist Dr Riyaz Kaba.
The technology uses non-thermal energy to create lesions in heart tissue during ablation procedures, an alternative to traditional thermal techniques that use heat or cold to treat arrhythmias. The catheter enables rapid treatment of abnormal heart rhythms, including atrial flutter, while avoiding thermal damage to surrounding tissue.
Dr Kaba said: ‘This marks an incredible advancement in the treatment of heart abnormalities. As we continue to see more varieties of heart conditions this technology enables us to act with efficiency and precision that benefit our patients massively.
‘I am proud to have been able to utilise this technology to make such a profound impact on my patients’ lives and look forward to seeing how many more patients will benefit from this pioneering treatment.’
The procedures were performed in Cromwell Hospital’s recently opened catheterisation laboratory, which provides cardiovascular and radiology services.
