Elysium Healthcare has opened Ash Ward, a specialist inpatient service for older men with complex health needs.
The ward at Gateway Recovery Centre in Widnes, Cheshire, was designed following latest guidance on dementia friendly environments. It offers sensory areas, family visiting rooms both on and off the ward, and a disabled friendly bathroom and toilet.
The ward’s multidisciplinary team will consist of a consultant psychiatrist with experience in old age psychiatry, a nursing team that has expertise in managing older people with mental illness, cognitive problems, physical health issues as well as challenging behaviour, and a psychology team specialising in cognitive assessment, behaviour assessment tools, psychological formulation and support.
Admission criteria to the ward includes men with a primary diagnosis of dementia or related neuropsychiatric conditions, a mental disorder and physical illness or frailty that contributes to the management of their mental illness, and psychological or social difficulties related to the ageing process, or end-of-life issues whose needs may be best met by a service for older people.
