HCA Healthcare UK expands CAR T-cell therapy to Manchester

HCA Healthcare UK has expanded access to CAR T-cell therapy to The Christie Private Care in Manchester.

The move makes The Christie Private Care the first independent provider outside London to offer the personalised immunotherapy for eligible patients with a range of blood cancers, including lymphoma, leukaemia and multiple myeloma.

CAR T-cell therapy is an advanced form of immunotherapy that uses a patient’s own immune cells to target and destroy cancer cells. The treatment involves collecting T-cells from the patient’s blood, genetically modifying them in a specialist laboratory to recognise cancer cells, and then infusing them back into the patient.

HCA Healthcare UK has provided CAR T-cell therapy for certain blood cancers in London since 2019 and, in 2025, became one of the first providers to offer the treatment for multiple myeloma.

The therapy is now available at The Christie Private Care for eligible patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, high-grade B-cell lymphoma, primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma, multiple myeloma and B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Jane Whitney-Smith, chief executive of The Christie Private Care, said: ‘We are proud to expand access to CAR T-cell therapy at The Christie Private Care, bringing this highly advanced and personalised treatment to patients across the North of England and beyond.’

Ahmed Abdulgawad, consultant haematologist at The Christie Private Care, said the treatment represented ‘a major advancement in the treatment of blood cancers’, particularly for patients whose disease had relapsed or failed to respond to standard therapies.

‘Not only does it provide an opportunity for long-term remission, but as a one-off treatment it allows patients to enjoy a longer treatment-free period with a better quality of life,’ he said.
