According to a report by the Qianzhan Industry Research Institute, Chinese people spent (US$1.1bn) on IVF treatment outside China. It estimated the number could exceed (US$1.3bn) in 2017. Popular destinations are Thailand and the US. Russia is also seeing growth.
The Qianzhan report was quoted an article on CGTN.com. One Thailand IVF clinic manager is interviewed, saying Thailand expects this year to see a 40% growth in medical tourists from China looking for IVF treatment. An IVF clinic from Moscow says they are also seeing growth, pointing out their advantage of being able to offer a surrogacy service.
The article says that the growth in outbound medical travel for IVF treatment is also due to the lack of reproductive services in China. It says that Chinese authorities have strict control of issuing licenses for such services and that there were only 432 centres acquiring IVF qualifications in 2016.
