Ghana’s medical tourism plan needs private support

Ghana’s Minister of Health has called on private and quasi-government health establishments to help the government to achieve its vision of positioning Ghana as the centre for medical tourism in West Africa.

The minister went on to state that, apart from providing quality healthcare, these health establishments could also help strengthen the public health sector. They could do that by not using money to entice specialists from public health to private health.

Ghana is trying to position itself as centre of medical tourism in West Africa, although there are still many challenges in the country’s health sector.

While encouraging medical tourism the minister stressed that this must be secondary to an affordable, direct access, and acceptable service for all local clients.
