Russia had 300,000 foreign medical tourists in 2018, claims healthcare minister Veronika Skvortsova; “The figures are 20,000 foreign patients in 2016, 120,000 in 2017; and according to preliminary data, over 300,000 in 2018. The popularity of medical treatment in Russia among foreigners helps to bring extra money to Russia.

A recent article in RT, claimed the number of foreigners coming to Russia for medical treatment is growing exponentially, potentially rising by 40% last year, according to Medsi, one of the biggest networks of private clinics in Russia.

Readers should note that these are not true medical tourism numbers. They are instead international patients that will include travellers and others who became ill or injured while on holiday or business in Russia, international students and expatriates working in Russia.

The Russian Healthcare Ministry is considering opportunities to boost export of medical services and inbound medical tourism to Russia. President Vladimir Putin ordered the government in May 2018 to increase the export of medical services at least fourfold in comparison to 2017.
