Cuba is developing four vaccines for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and has plans to rapidly vaccinate its 11.3m population. The country plans to offer the vaccine to Iran, Venezuela, Vietnam, and India, and tourists arriving in Cuba will be offered the chance to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
While maintaining strict quarantine and testing rules for all tourists and medical tourists Cuba is looking forward to a new beginning.
According to Havana’s Finlay Vaccine Institute, Cuba intends to produce 100 million doses of the Soberana 02 vaccine this year and to vaccinate the entire Cuban population of 11.3 million people.
Soberana 02 isn’t the only vaccine Cuba is producing: three others are in various stages of testing, the Abdala, Soberana 01 and Mambisa, the latter having a nasal spray delivery.
Famed for the excellence of its education, medical and technical skill, Cuba has managed to be a medical tourism destination for Canadians and others for many years, despite sanctions from the USA.
Politics means that the USA will not buy a vaccine from Cuba, and Florida is struggling with vaccine tourism from other states.
Cuba has been under embargo by the USA since 1960 but survives and plans to improve the infrastructure by attracting foreign investment, initially from China.
President Joe Biden has pledged to get U.S. Cuba policy back on track, resuming diplomacy and ending US bans on travel and investment; details are awaited.
