Doctors hit out at PMI providers

The leaders of 16 medical professional bodies have complained about private medical insurers increasingly imposing clinical restrictions by employing open referral. The latter, the main proponent of which Bupa, has come under much criticism by hospital consultants, restricts GPs from recommending consultants to patients, instead leaving it for the insurer to recommend consultants it will pay for.
