Gay care home plans in Birmingham

Birmingham’s gay community is formulating plans to develop a care home specifically for older homosexuals. Discussions have been focused on whether creating a place where gay people can live without feeling judged is the way forward or whether the city’s lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) community should be working with existing providers to help them understand the issues facing this group. Founding member of the Older Lesbians Network Sue Davis told the Birmingham Mail that gay people wanted to feel accepted and welcome in a care home and ultimately want companionship with people with similar experiences. She said: They want to feel they can be who they are. You have to remember it was illegal not that long ago. There are still women around who were given electric shock treatment in the past to try to cure them.
