The Palliative Care Funding Review team submitted its final report to the Secretary of State for Health last month, with a document proposing a funding model based on a needs classification system which would ensure that funding follows a patient in a clear and transparent way. Tasked by the government to carry out an independent review of palliative care for adults and children last summer, the group has come back with a review which brands the existing system as confused and lacking in the offer of any meaningful choices. It said that despite surveys suggesting that between 56% and 65% of adults would prefer to die at home, it remains the case that the vast majority die in hospitals at much greater cost to the country than is necessary.
