HCA carries out private sector’s first robotic-assisted heart bypass

HCA Healthcare UK has performed the first robotic-assisted minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (RA-MIDCAB) in the UK private sector.

The procedure was carried out at London Bridge Hospital using the da Vinci Xi robotic system from Intuitive. It allows surgeons to perform coronary artery bypass surgery through small keyhole incisions, avoiding the need to open the breastbone and reducing recovery times for patients.

The operation was led by consultant cardiothoracic surgeon Mr Dincer Aktuerk (pictured), who said the first patient was able to return home within 72 hours of surgery. ‘By introducing this robotic approach at HCA UK, we’re transforming lives with faster recovery and helping patients return to normal life much sooner,’ he said.

The da Vinci Xi system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into precise actions by four robotic arms in real time, providing enhanced dexterity, steadiness and a magnified 3D view of the heart. The technology enables greater accuracy when working on delicate coronary structures.

HCA UK said the procedure represents a major advancement in the delivery of minimally invasive cardiac surgery and builds on its established cardiac care offering.
