The Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN) has announced a refresh of its Medical Practitioners Assurance Framework (MPAF), led by former NHS national medical director Professor Sir Stephen Powis.
The framework, first introduced in 2019, sets out principles for medical governance across the independent sector and is used by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in assessing whether services are well led. It is also embedded within the NHS Standard Contract for providers delivering NHS-funded care.
IHPN said the update is intended to ensure the framework reflects current best practice and remains aligned with developments across the health system. The refreshed version is expected to be published in autumn 2026.
Professor Powis will be supported by a reference group including representatives from independent providers, the NHS, Royal Colleges, regulators, patient groups and consultants in private practice. IHPN said it will also consult with its membership during the process.
IHPN director of regulation Dawn Hodgkins (pictured) said: ‘This is an opportunity to build on the progress made since 2019 and ensure the framework continues to support providers to deliver safe, high-quality care for patients.’
She added that more than 90% of independent locations are currently rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC, with patient satisfaction reported at 97–98%.
Professor Powis said the framework has played an important role in strengthening governance.
