Bupa-owned King Edward VII’s Hospital has introduced Aquablation therapy, a minimally invasive robot-assisted treatment for enlarged prostate that offers an alternative to conventional surgery.
The procedure uses the AquaBeam robotic system, which combines real-time imaging with a heat-free waterjet to remove excess prostate tissue while minimising damage to surrounding structures.
Intended for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, the treatment can provide lasting relief from urinary symptoms while preserving ejaculatory function and carrying a low risk of erectile dysfunction.
Professor Richard Hindley, consultant urologist at King Edward VII’s Hospital, said: ‘Despite affecting around three million men in the UK, an enlarged prostate remains a relatively unknown condition. This innovative treatment reduces the risk of irreversible complications such as incontinence and sexual dysfunction, giving patients greater reassurance when considering their options. It has clear benefits over the traditional TURP procedure.’
Alongside the introduction of Aquablation, the hospital has also completed its first Rezum procedure, a minimally invasive treatment that uses water vapour to relieve symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
