The new local government in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), a British territory, has allocated US$2.5 million in the budget to develop medical tourism.
Premier Andrew Fahie has confirmed that US$2.5 million has been allocated to this venture. “This essential investment is critical to ensuring that the BVI Health Services Authority is able to collect sufficient revenue to meet all of its obligations.”
However, alongside this budget promise is the plan to make BVI Peebles Hospital self-financing, by removing other sources of finance.
There is very limited potential for the medical tourism sector in the BVI. There are not enough trained local doctors and the islands are prone to tropical storms and hurricanes.
Peebles is a public hospital with limited facilities and complex medical problems are frequently referred to hospitals in the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guyana or mainland USA.
