Regulator focuses on Dubai’s surgery centres

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has given a deadline of 18 months to the 50 local one-day surgery centres to obtain international accreditation and will also be increasing the frequency of inspections to the facilities.

If a day surgery centre does not get the needed accreditation within 18 months, it will automatically get downgraded to a clinic. This means that they will no longer be allowed to perform any day surgery. Centres that are established in the future also have 18 months from the date of the license.

The DHA says that there are 50 one-day surgery centres, 37 private hospitals (all but one have international accreditation), and 1,212 outpatient clinics in Dubai.
The UAE is now oversupplied with clinics. Most are investor owned, and with increased competition prices are being driven down.
