Dubai is undertaking a pilot project that will eventually lead to hotel-style star rating system for hospitals. The rating system will eventually determine the price of treatment at hospitals.

The pilot is being undertaken with five hospitals to define the key performance for the system. Once the pilot is over, the KPIs will be applied to 29 private and four government hospitals.

Dr Laila Al Marzouqi at Dubai Health Authority explains, “These KPIs will be based on a complete 360-degree assessment of the hospital, which will cover international accreditation of doctors, clinical morbidity and mortality rates, availability and quality of medical equipment, availability of beds and medical compliance.”

The price of treatment will be determined by the hospital star rating, once the system is introduced. There will also be minimum standards expected of every hospital.

There are plans to build a new 1,000-bed medical complex. The 10-storey Rashid Medical Complex will house 250 wards, 1,000 outpatient clinics, as well as amenities such as a five-star hotel, green residential buildings and shopping areas.
