The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Ethiopian government plan to build what they are calling a “regional cancer excellence centre” for US$450m in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
It is intended that the East African Cancer Centre, which will be completed within two years, will help with cancer-related healthcare in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda.
“The establishment of this will be instrumental in identifying and determining the means and mechanisms to mitigate the disease burden,” said minister of health Amir Aman.
There are fewer than African 2,00 doctors who have specialised in cancer treatment with the majority in only a few African countries.
“This is a vital initiative that we have been working on during the 10 years, and which needs to translate into action for the benefit of the people in the region,” said IGAD executive secretary Mahboub Maalim.
