Trinidad and Tobago: a new healthcare destination?

Tobago is well on its way to becoming a destination for health care and health tourism, as part of the Tobago Tourism Agency’s Roadmap for Growth 2020 – 2023.

The Roadmap for Growth 2020 – 2023 identified the need to explore new niche development and diversification, as well as support and rejuvenate existing niches. Wellness tourism was identified as a viable option to be developed with quality and competitive tourism products.

The launch of health tourism was unveiled at the opening of the US$27 million Moriah Health Centre managed by the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago.

Tobago, despite its small size, now has 18 health centres as well as two hospitals in Scarborough and Roxborough.

As the national economy slowly reopens, the country believes that health tourism will attract visitors from some key source destinations, including the USA, the UK, and other parts of Europe.  It believes it can also attract medical travellers in search of treatments for heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
