Rise in mental health complaints to NHS

Data released by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) has revealed that written complaints specifically relating to mental health services have shot up from 9,587 in 2009-10 to 11,749 in 2012-13 – an increase of almost 28%.

Bupa underlying profit up

Bupa, in its half year statement for the six months to the end of 30 June 2013, showed net insurance premiums up from £3.3bn to £3.5bn helping global revenue to rise 8% to £4.5bn (2012: £4.1bn). Total claims and expenses were £4.3bn (2012: £3.9bn), financial income after expenses £7.3m (2012: £24.9m), which once non-underlying items of £40.9m was added left profit before taxation of £218.0m (2012: £256.0m).

Christchurch Group acquires Hunters Moor

The neurological rehabilitation platform Christchurch Group, owned by Sovereign Capital, the UK private equity buy & build specialist, has acquired Birmingham based Hunters Moor,. The services provides neurological rehabilitation services for adults with acquired and traumatic brain injuries and spinal injuries. The move increases the group’s current capacity by over 60% making it one of the largest independent neurological rehabilitation providers in the UK. Hunters Moor comprises two units with a total of 45 beds. One unit caters for those needing neurological rehabilitation with complex, physical rehabilitation needs. While the other specialises in neurological rehabilitation for individuals with challenging behaviours or those requiring sectioning under the Mental Health Act. It offers community-based support and rehabilitation to service users who have been discharged and individualised treatment programmes for each client. 0These can range from short-term intensive treatment to respite and long-term slow stream rehabilitation.

Simplyhealth launches partnership

Simplyhealth has joined forces with wellbeing experts, Robertson Cooper, to support people’s health, wellbeing and resilience in the workplace through its Good Day at Work’ network. Good Day at Work’ is a free online community where individuals and employers can access a wealth of resources to help improve their levels of wellbeing, as well as sharing ideas and experiences with others. Alongside guides, videos, reports and case studies, the site includes i-resilience, a personality questionnaire designed to identify where individuals draw their resilience from. Mental health patients use NHS more

Mental health service users have double the rate of hospital attendances compared to the general population – across A&E, inpatients and outpatient services, according to Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) data. Four in 10 service users visited A&E at least once in 2011/12 compared to two in 10 of the general population.
