Spire to offer direct to consumer genetic testing

Spire Healthcare has launched a direct-to-consumer genetic test designed to assess an individual’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Spire is among the first major UK providers to offer Health Insights as a standalone self-pay test, which will initially be available through its London Doctors Clinics.

Developed in partnership with Genomics, the test combines polygenic risk scoring with clinical factors such as age, sex at birth and ethnicity to produce a personalised risk profile.

Patients will undergo an initial GP consultation to determine eligibility, before completing a saliva-based test kit sent by post. Results are returned within four to six weeks and reviewed with a GP, alongside tailored health and lifestyle guidance.

Spire Healthcare CEO Justin Ash said: ‘Empowering people with the knowledge to understand their genetic make-up and identify their personalised risk of developing certain diseases will help them to proactively manage their health. We are excited to launch this standalone genetic test, which doesn’t require a health insurance policy, through our partnership with Genomics, enabling us to further personalise the care we deliver to patients.’

Genomics CEO and co-founder Professor Sir Peter Donnelly said: ‘With the launch of Health Insights for Spire, we can now provide more personalised, better-informed advice, to help guide individuals to take preventative action, undertake screening and begin treatment pathways earlier. This product ushers in a new era of truly personalised healthcare, a future where everyone can understand their genetic risk for common chronic diseases and access the information they need to reduce those risks.’

The test will be rolled out across London Doctors Clinics sites in Liverpool Street, Oxford Street and King’s Cross, with plans to integrate it into its wider health screening services.
