First multi organ transplants in UAE

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has made history in the UAE in delivering a multi-organ transplant programme.

Physicians at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi have made history in the UAE in delivering a multi-organ transplant programme by completing full liver and lung transplants, following earlier heart and kidney transplants.

Following the pioneering surgeries, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has now performed deceased donor transplants for four major organs: kidney, heart, liver and lung. This follows the UAE government decree in 2017 that allows deceased donor transplants.

The Abu Dhabi clinic worked closely with the Cleveland Clinic Transplant Centre in the US, a world leader in organ transplantation; partner hospitals in the UAE; and the Saudi Centre for Organ Transplant (SCOT) in establishing its organ transplant programme.

The transplant programme has also benefitted from collaboration with Abu Dhabi Police and other government organisations. By co-operating with multiple facilities across the region, a wider pool of potential donors can be engaged, and transplants can be conducted more rapidly for the seriously ill.

Sheikh Khalifa Medical City is the only other hospital to offer transplant surgery in Abu Dhabi.
