NI care transition system ‘flawed’

Northern Ireland’s children’s commissioner has said young people with learning disabilities face a flawed system when moving into adult services. In a review of services, Patricia Lewsley-Mooney revealed there were inconsistencies, weaknesses and gaps in existing arrangements, according to research commissioned from Queen’s University, Belfast. The report examined current law, policy and services relating to transitions and highlighted on-going difficulties with current arrangements, demonstrating that there can be a stark contrast between international child rights obligations placed upon government and the reality experienced by young people and their families in Northern Ireland.
