Bulgaria’s mountain ski resorts are subject to special rules to contain the spread of Covid-19 and the country’s winter resorts are reporting 40% occupancy. Spa destinations are however booked 100%, which is helping the goal to establish Bulgaria as a year-round tourist destination.
4.5 million tourists spent the night in accommodation in Bulgaria in 2020. Of these, more than 3.3 million were Bulgarians and more than 1.2 million were foreigners, according to data from the Unified Tourist Information System. The Ministry of Tourism has prepared a special advertising campaign for the Russian and German markets.
The borders are open to tourists, health tourists and medical tourists but there are no figures yet on medical and health tourism for 2020 or 2021.
