Thailand’s BDMS sees medical tourists return

The latest financial results from Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (BDMS) show an increase in Thai and international patients. For the nine-month period ended 30 September 2022 the operating income for BDMS was Baht 69.125 billion (US$1.96 billion), an increase of 28% on 2021. International patient revenues increased 71%, mainly from more Asian and Middle East patients.

There was growth driven from both Thai and international patients. As a result, overall occupancy rate increased from 57% in 9mths 2021 to 75% in 9mths 2022.

A 30% increase in revenue from hospital operations was mainly from an increase in Thai patient revenues of 22%. International patient revenues increased 71%, mainly from more Asian and Middle East patients. Revenue proportion between Thai and international patients changed from 82%:18% in 9mths 2021 to 77%:23% in 9mths 2022.

The figures over-state the number of medical tourists, as it includes Cambodians in BDMS-owned hospitals in Cambodia and foreigners living in Thailand or Cambodia.
