India: medical tourism by train

India’s state railway Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has started online medical tourism packages for customers, in a bid to enhance its travel and tourism offerings.

IRCTC is aiming to provide a holistic experience of medical value travel, coupled with other elements such as travel and accommodation arrangements, road transfers and optional wellness packages after the treatment.

The railway has partnered with a medico-technical online services company on a pilot basis.  The company will provide the back-end services to the customers seeking various medical and wellness packages.

IRCTC’s medical treatment and wellness packages are offered at competitive prices, using a network of hospitals, nursing homes and diagnostic centres co-ordinated with its technical partner. It has launched a portal site, http://www.irctctourism.com/MedicalTourism, where potential medical travellers complete a basic enquiry form detailing their need for treatment.  Once the enquiry is generated, the IRCTC team will call the customer and explain the treatment options.

The company is promoting the packages through its pan-India office network.
