Iran grows inbound medical travel

Iran attracted 125,231 international medical tourists during the first quarter of the current Persian calendar year (from March 21, 2022).  The Health Ministry’s tourism office is targeting one million medical tourists, mainly from neighbouring countries, to arrive in Iran in 2022. This is double the numbers for 2021.

According to the official Iran News Agency, the majority were from neighbouring countries Iraq, Afghanistan, and Azerbaijan, plus Gulf states.

Iran is a regional hub for medical tourism.  Many Iranian cities are considered health hubs with 200 hospitals and clinics having permission to accept foreign patients.

Medical tourism in Iran is a win-win opportunity both for the country and foreign patients, as they are offered affordable yet high quality treatment, and the country gains considerable foreign currency.

Iran has cutting-edge medical technologies, high-tech medicine and diverse specialisations, and affordable procedures. It is seeking to exceed its yearly medical tourism numbers to two million in calendar year 1404 (March 2025-March 2026).
